Edinburgh still felt so familiar, like I had never left. I was happy to hear English all around me but have to admit I missed the German too. Edinburgh is such a great city with so many people from so many places, beautiful old buildings, not half as modern as my area in Oldenburg. Old in a cosy way. Catching sight of Arthur’s Seat and walking around campus and familiar areas, I felt reassured. Pleasant nostalgia.
We saw many beautiful fountains, flowered gardens, old beautiful buildings and new modern ones which were very well designed. We returned the bikes and went on a short walk before we headed back, through a Hare Krishna concert/performance at the big fountain.
My fingers hurt a lot initially from pressing down so hard on the strings but I was learning so much so fast that I couldn´t stop. Hunger, tiredness, stress would all melt away as I sang along with some simple songs I had learnt.
It’s not formal at all- people from the building say hi and join us so spontaneously. We sing songs like Hotel California, Hello (Lionel Richie), Summer Wine, Smells like Teen Spirit, Zombie, I believe I can fly, some Nickleback and we’re trying Scorpions too. We all help each other with the notes and learning new songs. It’s a lot of fun and has increased the joy in my life!
Social activity returned to 4th gear within the second day I was back. Let´s sing, let´s go out for dinner with the guest speaker, let´s watch the game/a movie together, let´s cook together, come over for dinner, etc etc. It´s fun! Today there is a birthday party by Wold See, a lake half an hour bike ride from Oldenburg. It is surrounded by trees and you get there by a small mud road. The birthday girl planned to decorate it with candles hanging from the branches of the surrounding trees. I think it will be very pretty!
Today I will savour the other half too
Like a cloud in the air, I will keep floating
Meanwhile my jazz/pop choir performed in Acapella Abend (evening) on Fri and Sat nights. Saturday’s performance for all the groups were better because I think people had more energy. There was a group from Berlin. Four young men, one of who finished his Masters here only last Sem. He got to do the solo last semester in our performance. That was by far the most entertaining breathtaking performance. They don´t have a name yet and aren´t on youtube or anything but they will go places! We had Thriller, This Love, Time of the Season, Gummy Bears, Falling Slowly, Ein Abend in Paris, and some Alt Musik (1500s stuff). My choir sang Man in the Mirror, The Way you Look Tonight, Baba Yetu and Dancing Queen.
What a night! 6 hours of bliss, music and being taken to different parts of the world and planes of ecstacy. I´m still high! And it was better than any club or party where everyone is listening to a stereo because everyone was part of the music, the group was familiar, fresh and spirited! The enjoyment was of and from a more personal part of each musician there.
I had movie and rockband evenings last week, and one birthday gathering. On the weekend I visited the Christmas Market (German tradition:)) with colleagues and friends and went for another birthday gathering after that… then listened to loud cool music with my flatmate until late in the night. Been having a great time, almost not noticing the cold!
Jazz/Pop Choir has started again on Monday evenings. The department had its monthly social gathering at the Loft last to last Thursday. The very next day we had a WG-psycho night where we all watched The Shining together.
