Social activity returned to 4th gear within the second day I was back. Let´s sing, let´s go out for dinner with the guest speaker, let´s watch the game/a movie together, let´s cook together, come over for dinner, etc etc. It´s fun! Today there is a birthday party by Wold See, a lake half an hour bike ride from Oldenburg. It is surrounded by trees and you get there by a small mud road. The birthday girl planned to decorate it with candles hanging from the branches of the surrounding trees. I think it will be very pretty!
So what do we do in data collection? We have a bunch of forms and questionnaires we ask the participant to fill out about how much they slept last night, their recent coffee intake, sleep, food, whether they drank or smoked for the past day. We ask them to fill out personality questionnaires, depression inventory, consent forms and information about their bank account so that we can pay them for their time.
Meanwhile my jazz/pop choir performed in Acapella Abend (evening) on Fri and Sat nights. Saturday’s performance for all the groups were better because I think people had more energy. There was a group from Berlin. Four young men, one of who finished his Masters here only last Sem. He got to do the solo last semester in our performance. That was by far the most entertaining breathtaking performance. They don´t have a name yet and aren´t on youtube or anything but they will go places! We had Thriller, This Love, Time of the Season, Gummy Bears, Falling Slowly, Ein Abend in Paris, and some Alt Musik (1500s stuff). My choir sang Man in the Mirror, The Way you Look Tonight, Baba Yetu and Dancing Queen.
What a night! 6 hours of bliss, music and being taken to different parts of the world and planes of ecstacy. I´m still high! And it was better than any club or party where everyone is listening to a stereo because everyone was part of the music, the group was familiar, fresh and spirited! The enjoyment was of and from a more personal part of each musician there.
I had movie and rockband evenings last week, and one birthday gathering. On the weekend I visited the Christmas Market (German tradition:)) with colleagues and friends and went for another birthday gathering after that… then listened to loud cool music with my flatmate until late in the night. Been having a great time, almost not noticing the cold!
Jazz/Pop Choir has started again on Monday evenings. The department had its monthly social gathering at the Loft last to last Thursday. The very next day we had a WG-psycho night where we all watched The Shining together.
It is a mobile carnival of sorts with rides, shops, eatables and games. The place was full of bright lights, cool music and screams. It is a great place to go to watch people make the most animated expressions while on the rides.
Here are some photos of the neighbourhood. We went for a walk today after Maren’s Birthday-cake party. Maren is my flatmate’s girlfriend. She is here quite often so it’s almost like she is my flatmate too. She turns 24 today 🙂
22nd September 2011 This morning on the radio, I heard a weather report unlike any other. The lady was shouting in German with even some ‘bad words’ which I could recognise about the summer which had more than its share of rain and how horrible it was that the bad weather was continuing into Autumn. … [Read more…]
I have been grappling with some difficult questions about home and belonging, what to do with life, whether this PhD is just a job to me or more, and who I am.
